Roça Sundy is one of the six roças that make up São Tomé and Príncipe's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in July 2026.

At Roça Sundy you discover the real character of Príncipe Island. Stay in the heart of Príncipe's chocolate story at this characterful, boutique plantation hotel and learn how the production of chocolate has been reclaimed by the local community, who are now creating organic, delicious and fairly traded confectionery of the highest quality. Discover another side of Príncipe

Roça Sundy is Príncipe Collection’s much loved boutique hotel, comprising two beautifully restored buildings, Eclipse House and Cacao House. From here, it is an easy and scenic 2 km walk to the beach at Sundy Praia.

Originally, Roca Sundy was home to the Sundy plantation owners, where, back in a darker past, slave-farmed cacao turned Sao Tome and Principe into one of the biggest cacao producers in the world. Today, though, every stay here helps to support local initiatives, protect the island’s unique ecosystems and foster community well-being. In this way, we hope to make it a part of the island’s positive future, without forgetting its past.

SUSTAINABILITY

UNESCO World Heritage

In July 2026, UNESCO inscribed The Roças of São Tomé and Príncipe: Colonial Agricultural System and Forced Migration on the World Heritage List, recognising their outstanding universal value, their role in the history of coffee, cocoa and the development of the archipelago, and the forced migration and forced labour on which that history was built.

Roça Sundy forms part of this serial World Heritage Site, a place where agricultural production, architecture and community life evolved together. The restoration now under way is part of caring for that heritage. When Roça Sundy reopens, guests will stay within this extraordinary heritage while contributing to its continued conservation and appreciation.
